Today I would like to talk about Links.
Links are pretty straight forward. If you have a website that is North Carolina Fire/Emergency Related including but not limited to Department site, Fire Marshall site, Fire Association site, Live Dispatch or other fire related please submit it by going to Links and clicking Add A Link. I’ll then check out the site and approve or disapprove it. This helps to keep the Spammers out.

The first thing I'd like to talk about today is Submit Article.
Don't let this scare you. Submit Article is nothing more than submitting a question, providing an answer or discussing a subject. It is broken down into several topics, General Discussion, Fire News, Fire Jobs, Fire Training and Site News. Site News is reserved for Site Administrators and is where you will find site specific information. The rest are open for you to post in as relevant topic discussion. For instance, you could ask a General Training question like "How do you train on BlahBlahBlah..." In the other topics just keep it relevant. Fire News, Fire Jobs are just that. If you have a little bit of news go ahead and post it.

Now here's something cool.
You can syndicate all your posts. What does that mean? If you click on your username under Who's Online on the right it will take you to your profile. In your profile you'll see "RSS Feed for username XML. This is the RSS/XML feed for all your posted articles/stories and you can use it in any online Feed Aggregator. So if you have your own web page you can pull all of your articles into your own site. Likewise we have an RSS/XML feed for each Topic and one for the entire site.

Also if you decide to become a regular poster I can upgrade your rights to give you more functionality. So go ahead and give it a try. Don't worry if it's not grammatically correct, it's the information that's important.

Hint: Write it first in MS Word or MS Wordpad and use the Spellchecker and don't feel bad if someone edits your post. Usually it's just a matter of fixing some formatting or typos.

It's a simple question but maybe not a simple answer. NC-FireFighter in no way shape for form can compete with the big boys like Firehouse. We don't have big staffs of people. If you haven't figured it out we're a very small operation. In fact an operation of one. And that one has a full time job. And this isn't the only web site. In addition to this site I maintain 23 other web sites. This being said the only way this site can survive is that I have rely on you're input in the form of Articles, Links, Wiki Pages, Suggestions and Complaints.

An article can be as easy as asking a question or talking about an interesting incident or just getting others input on a particular subject. So far there are almost 50 users from almost that many departments across North Carolina which doesn't mean that others aren't looking. Before I performed our latest upgrade there were over 200 users.

I will be posting Articles on the various features of the site and how you can use better use those features to your advantage. I will also be talking about future development. In the meantime I am soliciting your idea's, suggestions and complaints. How would YOU like to use the site? What do YOU want to be able to do?
